That's interesting. Is that why too much necf relief is a bad thing?

My impression was the same - between the nut and the finger fretting the note. You're basically "slapping" the string on the upper fretboard as well as playing the fretted note.
Try this - playing an A on the low E string (1st finger) and hammer on the A sharp at the 6th fret, then go up one fret at a time, etc
See if this changes or eliminates the buzzing.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.
